Around the ACC

By ACC Blitz on Thursday, 14th May 2009

(5.14.09) The prospect of Georgia Tech and Maryland switching divisions, a financial crunch in the league, and ranking the top prospects in N.Carolina. Plus recruiting commitment updates from around the league. And a shocking prediction about the ’09 Atlantic Division Champion.

  • Maryland and Georgia Tech switching divisions. Hell of an idea, would line up Clemson, FSU, and GT. Not happening though, as the league shot down ideas of a switch. Would have been really interesting to see though.
  • It makes sense that, with the economy the way it is, even the ACC is turning to more fiscally sound practices. At the recent spring meetings, discussions were top heavy with talks regarding the financial situation for teams around the league. I’m wondering also if ACC coaches triming the size of squads that travel is another move to save a few dollars. VT coach Beamer attributes it to avoiding unneeded distraction to the team with players that don’t play, but on the flip side, you’d think it would actually save the schools a legitimate amount of money in the long run.
  • Not so fast thinking Kyle Parker is the new signal caller in Tiger town. Some how, some way, Willy Korn has slid in the eyes of many to the #2 QB for Clemson. I’ve got mad respect for KP, cannon for an arm, quick feet, and quick release (plus he’s a mainstay on the Tiger Baseball squad), but Willy Korn is still Willy Korn – one of the top dual-threat QB’s in the NATION coming out of high-school. After receiving a medical hardship red-shirt for his freshman season, was injured in the Georgia Tech game in ’08, and required shoulder surgery. With an entire off-season to recoup, and even more time to learn the system, don’t count out WK.
  • Clemson recruiting duties switched up a little. New offensive coordinator Billy Napier is to more of an ‘office’ style life, instead of hitting the recruiting trail. If Clemson can pull together a decent ’09 season, I’ll be interested to see how the Dabo + Napier + Kevin Steele (former Alabama Def. Coord, now same position at Clemson) will do.
  • Scouring the web at 4am like the loser I am, I did manage to come across a very interesting read by the Observer – rankings of the top 5 2010 players at key positions. You can almost bet 4 out of every 5 will wind up playing in the ACC next year:2010 Prospects in the state of North Carolina – Running Backs, Quarterbacks, Offensive Linemen, and Wide Receivers.
  • And finally, at first I laughed (out loud – so LOL) at this story about NC State being tops in the Atlantic Division in ’09. I’ll give the author some credit, he does raise some good points, and his reasons why The Pack can slide ahead of the powerhouses of the division seem feasible.
