Maryland talking series with Texas
From The Baltimore Sun.
Say this for the Terps — their nonconference football schedules have been getting spicier.
First, there was the March announcement that Maryland and Notre Dame have agreed to meet at FedEx Field in 2011 — just the second football game between the schools.
Now comes word that Maryland is discussing a home-and-home series with Texas. The Longhorns participated in last season’s national championship game, losing to Alabama.
Maryland says it has not discussed dates or game locations with Texas, nor has it seen a contract. Of course, that doesn’t mean such discussions aren’t forthcoming.
“Maryland is in prelimary discussions with officials at the University of Texas regarding the possibility of playing a home-and-home football series sometime in the future,” a Maryland athletic department spokeperson said. “The Maryland home date could potentially be played at FedEx Field. No contracts have been signed, nor have any details been finalized.”
Many Maryland fans have said they want the school to play a top-notch nonconference schedule. Coach Ralph Friedgen is on record as favoring more regional-rivalry teams such as West Virginia and Navy. The Terps, 2-10 last season, will play both teams in 2010.
